Blog 2_Wk2_Manufacturing Consent

I was impressed by the film's use of B roll. This meaning that while people in the film were talking, the shot cut to objects and places that were relevant to what they were saying (example, 1:10:20). This keeps the scenes interesting. I particularly liked when the camera cut to shots of people pasting and stapling advertisements of Chomsky's lecture as he was being introduced (00:04:00). I thought that this was very creative, and it gave me a sense of Chomsky's importance, and how anticipated his lecture was. I was also impressed when Chomsky was quoting lines from books, and the camera zoomed in on book pages to show the sentences (00:04:45). This was visually exciting! It combined live footage with computer effects. I do, however, think that B roll could have been used more during the interviews of Chomsky. I found myself getting lulled by his calm voice, and not even paying attention to what I was watching. B roll during these interviews would have kept me engaged and focused, while also visually reinforcing what Chomsky was saying.
The B roll usage did just as I mentioned: gave me a visual aid to Chomsky's, as well as other speakers in the film's, messages. I thought it was ironic that advertisements of Chomsky's lecture were shown during his introduction. In the Propoganda Model, he argues that advertisements overshadow the quality of distributed news and knowledge. People who buy into advertisements are the product themselves. But then heavy advertising is shown promoting his event so that people attend. It reinforced that advertising influences the public to act in a certain way. These flyers influenced many people to attend his lecture, when they might not have on their own. It was an ironic twist that was displayed through the editing technique.

  1. I found it helpful that you provided specific film/camera terms in order to define the evidence you were referring to. I also found focusing in on people pasting advertisements of Chomsky to be an effective technique in illustrating his high level of influence on his audiences.
