Blog 4 "Art, Entertainment, Entropy"
Youngblood's article is informative and eye opening. Youngblood states that commercial media is unable to produce original art. Rather media uses clique stero-typical genres and plot lines to induce and manipulate the audience. Art relies on inspiration rather than memory to gain success. Entropy is the end product to commercial media and chaos ensues when entropy increases. Youngblood wrote this critique over thirty years ago and could never have imagined the new media world of Facebook or Twitter. I think Facebook could be either entropic or artist depending on how you use it. If you use Facebook to connect to your family, friends, artists, writers, and social organizations it has the possibility of creating an artistic medium. Facebook connects people to their favorite musicians, and writers. I recently connected with my favorite author Leslie Feinberg on Facebook. She is an activist and social organizers. Now I am constantly updated with information about ralleys and protests. The other side of the argument is if someone uses Facebook primarily for gossip, self deprecation, and flaunting the end result is entropic discourse. The person who uses Facebook like this becomes addicted to the cyber drama. Their addiction relies on the mella-drama of their interactions with other Facebook junkies.
