Critical Concepts: Walter Benjamin
Walter Benjamin wrote his seminal work "Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" in 1935 and his thesis was that with the advent of the camera and other forms of mechanical reproduction art has lost what he calls its "aura." For example, an actor's performance on stage has a certain aura of authenticity but when it is captured on video that aura is lost.
